    I am looking at possibly putting a 5.3 in my 72 Short StepSide. I want an engine that has nice performance and good gas mileage. I am going to put a T56 behind it.

    * Does the 5.3 require the LS-1 bellhousing like the 5.7?

    * This is a stupid one - I know a 5.7 is a 350, What is the 5.3 considered?

    * What type of gas mileage would I be looking at with the 5.3/T56/3.73 rear?

    * Would I have to use the LS1 engine mount adapter with the 5.3?

    Thanks

    1.not sure on the bellhousing, but going by GM standards it should work, they are good about interchanging parts, and as you may know most all the new gens share parts/and characteristics.

    2. 5.7=346ci, 5.3=327ci(?)

    3.i would venture a guess in the 20mpg range, better than stock with the 2 extra gears!

    4. hmmmmm GMCWntsLS1 can help ya there.

    I have a template or can make you some adapters to mount up to your engine mounts(about$40). Everything else sleeper said should be correct.

    Thanks for the information. GMCWntsLS1 I will have to contact you when I am going to do the conversion in spring.

    I will have to contact Dynatech when it comes time to do the wiring.

    1) Do I need to have the computer reprogramed?

    2) Do you know who does reprograming and how much it would cost?

    1. Dynatech can remove VATS(may not be present on 5.3's) which is the only tuning(other than performance) needed that i can think of now.

    2. i hear the guy over at www.nelsonperformance.com has had good results. he said he's gonna give me a free tune for mentioning his site too. lol
