Oil Pressure Sender w/ Stock '95 Gauge

    Hi all,
I have an '03 4.8L in a '95 Suburban. I've seen people making adapters to fit the SBC oil pressure sender in the head or block, but then I've also seen vague references to people using the Gen III sender with the SBC gauge.

Haven't been able to find any more info on wiring it up this way, but would like to. Currently, I have it wired per the '03 harness, with 5V reference, and the signal wire to the gauge, but no workey. Just pegs out the gauge.

I'm wondering if people are wiring 12V up to the Gen III sensor as reference, per the SBC harness? Anybody have experience with this setup?

    Thanks

Well if the sensor works on a 5v system, you can't use a 12v reference. You will need to splice into a 5v reference circuit and get your reference from there, otherwise I have heard of people using the base of the LS sensor and drilling/ tapping that for the SBC sensor.

Autometer makes an adapter from LS to I think it's 1/4 pipe. Or you can tap the block off cover above the oil filter. That way you can just use your factory sender and be done.

Yes, I understand that idea, and have already wired 5V to the sensor. Doesn't work. I was just hoping to confirm or disconfirm what I've heard about people "just wiring up" the Gen III, before I try wiring 12V to a 5V sensor, or replacing my existing sensor.

Dillan, if you have a link to the actual adapter, that would be awesome. I've scoured Summit with no hits. I'll tap the oil bypass plate if I have to, but I'm hoping there's any easier way.

This is the one I bought and used. I did have to drill it and tap it for 1/4 npt. Not sure if they make one already that size but that's what I did. Super easy and leak free.

The coolant temp adapter I got wouldn't work so I ended up using an f body 3 wire sensor and it's been fine. A lot of people say the gauge will be off but mine is correct according to my hp tuners anyway.

I do t know if this helps or not, but when I got to that part of the swap with my 2001 4.8 in my 95 rcsb, I just plug the stock 95 pig tail (still wired like stock in the 95 harness) into the stock 01 sending unit and it worked perfect. Reads ~55 cold ~45 idle warm.

Look up LS oil port adapter on ebay. About 15 bucks. Cheaper than buying a good tap. Use that and your original sensor.

You rock! Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I'll give it a shot in the next few days and report back.

I want to add to this topic for future reference. The 12V going into the oil pressure sender is a backup for the fuel pump relay, on my 94 you could disconnect the fuel pump relay and the oil pressure sender would keep it running. The 12V has no affect on the sensor and as such, you are able to simply plug in the sender to your stock harness, you will just lose the relay back up.
