Thread: 4L60e or 4L80e for me? 94 1/2 ton 12" lift 38s

  1. #1
ok so i am looking to put a 6.0 in my 94 z71 (running a cognito lift and 38s with 4.88s) and am wondering which way to go on trannys. I have the 10 bolt right now, this will be swapped for a built 14 bolt hopefully at the same time if not before. I know the 80e will take some more work to get it into my 1/2 ton, and the gears are not as optimal as the 1st is definitely not as deep as on the 60e, and also parts are more expensive. I know 60e's can be built to take a decent amount of HP, and i never hot run my truck around or run it hard, nor do i plan on running it hard even after the motor swap. I'm shooting for like 500/550-ish at the crank for rough numbers, and I do tow a 21' wakeboard boat sometimes, so what is my best option here? Just suck it up and go with the 80e from the get go, or with proper driving habits will the 60e hold up just fine?

    thanks

i dont have a lot of experience in this but my opinion would be go the the 80, from what iver ead on these forums alone would convince me that the 4l60 breaks fairly often. with 4.88s and 38" tires you could snap just about anything if you tried.

80 hands down, unless you want to change your transmission as often as your oil . If you got any questions hit me up, I live in Willows and am swaping a Vortec 454 and 4L80E into my 89 RCSB.
