Is there a list of what is the required minimum for closed loop operation of a Gen III engine? I have a 2001 5.3 and I'm going to use it exclusively off road so there are no emission requirements that I need to meet, I just want it to run properly and give diagnostic capabilities.

I'm planning on running it with a TH-400 and the engine was in front of a 4L60e so I know that I have to get the PCM reprogrammed as a manual tranny. I'm kind of lost after that, is a VSS required to make the engine function properly. I've done a little searching but I haven't found all that I'm looking forl. I've been working on other projects so this has been sitting on the back burner for awhile but I need to start getting serious before too much longer.

Thanks

On the engine dyno, an engine will go into closed loop with no problems, as soon as the engine coolant temp reaches a certain temperature. Somewhere around 137degs, I can't remember exactly. So you'll be fine removing all the trans sensor and any other send you'd like that are related to emissions.
You won't need the vss since you're running the TH400, the pcm and engine will run fin without it.

good luck,

Thanks for the info, I think that I'm going to like the Gen III once I get the buggy put together.

the closed loop operation temp can be set to whatever you would like it to be, but the stock is 131*. If i remember right its ETC vs. IAT to enable it and you can set it at a different level for whatever the IAT is. I have mine at 133* all the way across b/c that is the closest RAF point (dont ask me why I did that, I just like being precise&#33
