What about exhaust leak? Is it absolutely a metal on metal sound.

I would have bet $100 I had a lifter tick and it was exhaust. and it would only show itself when it got warm. You would have to get on it for a few runs to really warm it up and then you could hear it. Then let it idle and it would go away.

Im trying to imagine what would be affected by a rise in heat.

It very well could be, but this is louder than any lifter tick I've heard. On Sunday we're tearing it down. I've never heard this sound before and the truck has been cammed for 5k miles. I tightened every exhaust bolt on the truck twice this week... just to be sure. There is no leak that I can find.

Mine was a small hole at the collector of the pacesetters, I was able to just put a small weld and the noise disappeared. I hope its something easy for you.

Clogged oil filter. When the oil thinned out at operating temps it was starving the engine somewhere. Changed the oil with something a little heavier and replaced the filter... no problems since. I checked the oil 3x with it warm... every time it was good. It wouldn't go low until the RPM's were up.
